The Nutrition Program

Picture
The Murri school Nutrition Program operates daily to ensure that children are ‘fuelled with the right type of energy to learn best’. The children are provided with breakfast in the mornings when they arrive at school. At morning tea, toasted sandwiches, fruit and muesli bars are available for purchase. At lunchtime a hot meal, sandwiches, fruit and juice will be available for purchase.

Learning Opportunities

Beyond the Nutrition Program, the tuckshop provides an excellent venue for learning. Classes at all levels access the tuckshop to learn about the value of eating healthily and the skills involved in food preparation. Annual Health Week Expos educate groups of students through demonstrations and food sampling. Class teachers also utilise the tuckshop as part of cooking lessons in which anything from cupcakes, slices and meal time foods are made to eat on the spot or take home to loved ones. Older students use the space to fund-raise for events such as class excursions, camps or the annual semi-formal.

The tuckshop space is fitted out to serve the needs of a small industrial kitchen and has in the past facilitated TAFE classes in hospitality. These skills are useful when helping tuckshop staff to prepare for one of the many school events held during the calendar year.  As the school hosts many visitors, whether they be elders, community organisations or dignitaries attending official events, the tuckshop is always prepared to deliver a suitably impressive array of foods. Other events include the annual Speech Day, Art Exhibition, Naidoc Dinner, Sorry Day and the like.

The kitchen is the heart of many homes, and for us our tuckshop is exactly that. It is a central spot in our school where staff and students congregate because like most homes, kitchens and food bring people together in the nicest of ways.
