Annual Student Art Exhibition
"Modern Ochres"
The Murri School annual student art exhibition known as ” Modern Ochres” has become a highlight of the schools’ year.
The Exhibition was developed by our previous High School Deputy Principal Uncle Bob (Robert Cob).
Students have been producing artworks at a professional level for public display since 1999 with the event coinciding with the annual speech day. The venue for art display has evolved from an outdoor art installation to an art exhibition which is held in the school’s hall, the first Modern Ochres being held in the school hall was December 2011.
The exhibition is held over two hours, with invitations being sent to parents and to the wider community. Modern Ochres has now grown to include community members artworks, as well as artifacts, pottery, jewellery hand woven baskets made by the students during Young Men & Young Womens group who meet every week to learn the cultural significance of the work as well as developing new skills.
Each year it improves and gives the students a sense of personal satisfaction and pride in knowing that their works were not only appreciated, but also were now in demand.
Students work during their art classes for a full term developing the theme and producing artworks that reflect on what the themes meaning to themselves, the exhibition process has become part of the student’s assessment it also give them the opportunity to learn business skills, and to be paid for the hard work, a small commission is applied to each work to cover the original cost of the canvas, and to develop the program for the following year. The greater percentage of the sale goes to the individual student or divided between those contributing to a group work.
